It’s Time to Take Action: Sports Psychology in 2020-2021

We all need someone to talk to from time to time.

We all need someone to lean on.

With everything that has gone on over the past six months one could only imagine how many young athletes will need to talk.

Shorten seasons.

Lost opportunities.

Sporting dreams dashed by everything that has happened and simply the complex world of growing up in a global pandemic.

Hell I think we all have gone through stretches of confusion, anxiety and uncertainty during this time.

There’s no question sport psychologists will be very busy this season and rightfully so.

If I were an executive on any major junior, high level sports organization

or even a coach of minor sports I would seek out the advice or hire a sports psychologist this season to come to talk with players.

Obviously the culture revolving around the sports world has its share of issues regarding transparency and honesty.

We can’t just assume that young aspiring athletes will be ok and have nothing to share given all the circumstances of the events of the past six months.

With school starting up, tryouts and all the pressures associated with that sports psychologist better be on speed dial.

Obviously everyone wants a level playing field, but the teams and organizations that seek out the help of sports psychologists this swap. will be drastically ahead of the curve.

It’s time to give mental health the same attention that one would give their physical conditioning and preparation.

It’s time that we all take a proactive approach to our mental health.

Let’s all be transparent about our feelings and thoughts.

It’s time to start asking questions and talking with all young people and athletes, but more importantly it’s time to listen and seek out exports in the field that can not only provide solutions, but can provide balance, peace of mind and reassurance.

It’s time that all sports from top to bottom take action with regards to the mental health of all its participants.
