The Long Road Back for New Brunswick Born NHL Referee Chris Lee

People rarely talk about NHL referees in a positive light.

A matter of fact most NHL fans despise refs.

NHL officials rarely make headlines, and when they do it’s usually for all the wrong reasons.

NHL officials are unavailable for comment and media availability.

In many cases NHL officials are on an island, isolated and perhaps insulated from media attention.

The storylines involving NHL refs aren’t always black and white, especially when they suffer injuries.

Scouting the Refs do an amazing job showcasing professionally referees and the grind they go through game in game out.

The NHL’s often forgotten team, play a massive role in the game.

You see that’s what makes New Brunswick product Chris Lee’s return to the NHL so special.

Lee’s 19th NHL campaign got off to a late start.

The veteran ref suffered a serious injured late in the 2018 season.

Lee returned to action in January of 2019 where he officiated two AHL games before he made his NHL season debut on February 4, working a game between the Anaheim Ducks and Toronto Maple Leafs.

It was a long road back for Chris Lee, but the veteran of 1171 National Hockey League games finds himself inside the bubble officiating his 72nd playoff game today between the Hurricanes and the Bruins.

Lee’s path to the NHL and subsequent return from injury a year and half ago showcases the 50 year old’s character, resiliency and unwavering passion for the game.

Every NHL player or coach has a story.

Every NHL official has a story, we just never hear them given their place and role in the game.

  1. June 21 2021 – You need to update this storyline as the display of Chris Lee’s refereeing abilities in the past two games proves he has lost focus on his job requirements. Sad and frustrating for all to watch ;(
