Week 5 was another good one for New Brunswick High school football fans. The game that most people were keeping an eye on was in the 2nd division was les Castors facing off Les Olympiens de L’Odyssee on Friday night in Fredericton in the Evangeline Bowl game. Most people that I had the pleasure of talking to during the week, favoured les Castors and the Tremblay twins coming out victorious at home… but L’Odyssee had other plans. They came out with 28-14 victory to take sole possession of first place. Like most people however, I do not think this will be the last meeting between these 2 very evenly matched opponents. In other action in the 2nd division, we saw the Harrison Trimble Trojans beat the St. Malachy’s Memorial Saints 34-7. Bernice McNaughton blanked the Simonds Seabees 35-0, the Kennebecasis Valley Crusaders thumped the St. Stephen Spartans 48-0, and The Mathieu-Martin Matadors came up with their first victory of the season over the Oromocto Blues 15-0. The Matadors defence has been stellar in the last few weeks. It all started when they were able to keep the Tremblay brother to reasonable production and they have been consistent ever since. It will be fun to see how they match up against Devin Niles and the weapon filled L’Odyssee offence in Thursday night’s Acadie Bowl.
The 1st division saw the Tantramar Titans remain undefeated with a 39-0 victory over the visiting Leo Hayes Lions on Saturday. Otherwise the result that sticks out the most is the Moncton High Purple knights beating the Riverview Royals 17-7 on Saturday afternoon. This surprised some people, but Moncton High was rumoured to be a better team than the Royals at the start of this season. This was a hard fought game however, and could be another playoff preview. Moncton High is good on both sides of the ball and has been getting better every week since their week 1 loss to the Tantramar Titans. The other game saw the Fredericton High School Black Kats edge out the Saint-John Greyhounds 10-9 on Friday night. The source that I have that was at the game said it was a defensive battle to remember. This 1st division has had some great games so far and we can expect more of these style of game as the season continues.
The 9-man division once again saw some good action as well this weekend, but saw some pretty one sided results. The Sussex Sonics remained undefeated and moved to 4-0 with a 27-0 victory over the James M. Hill Memorial Tommies of MIramichi. The 2 other games saw the Rothesay Redhawks win their game 48-0 over the Hampton Huskies, and the Miramichi Valley Pulamoo fell to the Harbour View Vikings 38-8. This weekend will be the annual River Bowl football game between James M Hill and Miramichi Valley. The game will be played on Saturday at James M. Hill at 1pm. The Pulamoo took the 1st meeting between these 2 teams in week 1 by a 16-14 score, in the game that is now known as the “Hurricane bowl”!
