The Cat’s Out of the Bag

Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek let the “Wildcat” out of the bag yesterday when he tweeted the following.

The timing of the news is a little surprising, given Gardiner MacDougall’s currently coaching Team Canada at U18’s. On the other hand the timing of this news isn’t surprising given every organization was at the Q Cup this past weekend. We are all well aware of the fact that the hockey world is incredibly small and news travels at lightning speed. Marek’s tweet certainly didn’t catch some people off guard because the rumour mill has been spinning at warp speed for weeks. Jeff Marek is a pro amongst pro’s and is incredibly connected in the hockey world and his tweet got a ton of attention yesterday.

News is news and the speculation surrounding MacDougall’s potential departure from the “UNB Dynasty” that he has created is undoubtedly newsworthy. Marek’s tweet was very carefully worded, but still leaves a lot up to interpretation.

It’s hard for any organization to conduct private business these days especially when they’re trying to hire the right person or people for the job. No one truly knows what the vetting process is like behind closed doors with the Moncton Wildcats and nor they should because that’s their business.

What’s the likelihood of MacDougall taking the Wildcats job? We have no idea, only he and his family know the answer to that one and of course the Moncton Wildcats.

Throwing other names out right now isn’t the greatest thing to do either, but I will say this there are no doubt some great candidates applying for the head coaching position and the GM role. There are more questions than answers right now surrounding the Moncton Wildcats hiring process.

The clock is ticking with regards to a decision based on the time frame with the upcoming QMJHL draft being held in Moncton on June 7th and 8th.

The cat might be out of the bag on one candidate and Gardiner MacDougall might be a perfect fit for the Wildcats, but one would assume the timing of the news wasn’t the greatest for the either the Wildcats or MacDougall.

From a Wildcats perspective, they are trying to keep the process private and for MacDougall, he’s probably not a big fan of any distractions right now given the task at hand, trying to win yet another championship to add to his already sparkling resume.

Will that resume have the Moncton Wildcats on it? Time will tell.
