Over the course of the last few years a lot of people have asked if I’m teaching and what subject area I teach. I thought I would share some of the things we cover in class.

Topics and Themes covered so far in Personal Wellness 9:
- What is authenticity and why is it important?
- The Why Factor? Every topic and theme covered in class will be explained and a reason “why” we are covering it will be discussed
- The search for your passion and purpose and how that relates to your career and personal pathways
- “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”,
- “When we gain or seek more understanding, we gain empathy and compassion for others and ourselves”
- “How you feel about yourself drastically effects how you learn and how you learn drastically effects how you feel about yourself.”
- What or who inspires and empowers you and why?
- The importance of multiple intelligences and that everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and that we all have the capacity to learn differently.
- The importance of self-concept and the search for the “ideal self”
- How are you doing? What their experience at MHS has been like so far and how are they doing with life outside of school.
We are currently 12 days into the school year or something like, to be brutally honest I’ve lost track. The start up has been great on one hand and incredibly difficult on the other. Like I posted last Tuesday night, “Today was a good day, but yesterday made me question everything, The classroom is an unpredictable but yet special place, Trying to connect and reach Gr 9’s is incredibly challenging, but very rewarding Setting the tone is equally as challenging I just hope they know that I care.”
I really hope my students know that I care. I still want to be at the front of the room, I still enjoy being at the front of the room, but I’m not going to lie it’s really tough sometimes. Trying to connect with students that don’t want to engage or are disengaged is incredibly difficult, but it’s part of the job, it comes with the territory, but it’s tough. I’m not sure what happened the other day to make me think of what I wrote last year in May or early June, but I re-read it on that day and wanted to share it again. Sometimes we lose sight of the impact that we as teachers can have and just how resilient kids are.
They Walked In Today
We rarely ever know what they have gone through or what they have seen and experienced. We don’t know what happened to them last night. We don’t know if they have eaten or if they have slept, but they walked through the door today and there’s something to be said about that. Obviously, we all have our assumptions that we keep to ourselves, and we try to connect with them every day. Sometimes walking into class might not seem like a lot, but it’s the best and most they have to give. People talk about resiliency and work ethic all of the time, we all know the importance of it, but walking through the door might be as resilient as it comes for the kid that has the weight of the world on their shoulders. They walked in through the doors today with their thoughts, feelings, emotions, secrets, experiences, fatigue and problems just like we all do. How are we going to reach them? How are we going to teach them? How are we going to connect with them? Has anyone talked to them today? Has anyone acknowledged their existence? Has anyone listened to them? Has anyone asked them how they’re feeling? Has anyone tried to connect with them? We often forget just how resilient and driven they are. They walked in today and sometimes that’s the best they could do with what they have experienced and are currently experiencing in their lives. They walked in today, I hope to see them walk in tomorrow and the rest of the way.
